The Emergency Department at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH), located approximately 30 minutes west of London, is a medium-volume community emergency department seeing approximately 28,000 visits/annum. We see a wide patient spectrum and a nice mix of high acuity and medium acuity patients. SMGH is a family medicine run full service community hospital with most consultant services found at larger hospitals including internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, plastic surgery, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ENT, urology, ophthalmology, anesthesia, dermatology, physiotherapy and psychiatry. We are an up to date emergency department with a CT scanner and bed side ultrasound capabilities. We also have access to a C-arm for difficult reductions and a videolaryngoscope for difficult intubations. Apart from normal emergency duties, we are involved with patient admissions, provide neonatal, pediatric and adult code blue services for the hospital and tend to do almost all of our own fracture reductions and procedures.
Our emergency department is staffed by both UWO faculty and non faculty members who have either CCFP or CCFP(EM) certification. We enjoy a good relationship with our community family physicians, specialists and major tertiary care center (LHSC).
The ER treats a wide variety of patients, similar to any larger emergency department. We insist on maintaining a one-to-one staff to resident ratio which provides easy access to staff and an excellent learning opportunity.
Scheduling:
Can take 1 resident for 4 week electives per month. Usual workload is approximately 14 shifts/4 week rotation. We ask that you submit vacation requests at least 2-3 months in advance of your start date.
Please note: For CCFP(EM) residents, there is currently availability in blocks 8 and 10 ONLY for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Extras:
By the time this rotation starts we will expect the resident to attend our monthly departmental M&M rounds. The resident will be invited as well to attend our monthly CME rounds. We are also attempting to arrange for 1-2 half days in the OR for extra anesthesia experience. Practice SOOs can be coordinated for the resident after discussion with Dr. Grushka.
PGY Level / Type of Rotaion:
PGY 1 & 2 Elective Rotation / PGY 3 Community ER Rotation
PLEASE NOTE: ELECTIVES MUST BE FOUR WEEKS (1 MONTH) IN DURATION (PART OF A MONTH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE). ALL ELECTIVES LISTED BELOW AND ANY REQUESTS FOR ELECTIVES IN LONDON HOSPITALS ARE ARRANGED BY SUSAN PIERSON, DIVISION OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE AFTER CONSULTATION WITH OUR OFFICE.
