Pediatric Fellowship Program - From The Program Director
Sunday, 28 September 2008

Dear PEM Fellow,

Welcome to our fellowship program in pediatric emergency medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario!  We are delighted that you have decided to complete your fellowship at our institution.

As of September 1, 2003 I have assumed the position of Fellowship Director from Dr. David Warren.  Dr. Warren directs the Child Protection Program.  Dr. Gary Joubert is the director of the Pediatric Emergency Department while Dr. Rod Lim is the Site Chief.   Dr. Guido Filler is now the Chair/Chief of the Department Pediatrics.

As you are well aware this two-year fellowship program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

During the upcoming months you will rotate through the various clinical rotations, but initially you will commence in the Pediatric Emergency Department.  Concurrently you will be asked to participate in undergraduate, postgraduate, and community teaching sessions.  We are one of the few institutions that conducts both PALS and APLS courses.  Similarly, you will be actively involved in the administrative components of the Pediatric Emergency Department.  Traditionally, all of our fellows have been members of the Postgraduate Education Committee.  Finally, I would encourage you to set up a meeting with Dr. Michael Rieder early in your first year as Dr. Rieder is the Director of Research in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

You will receive the Pre-Survey Questionnaire that we have prepared for this year’s Royal College Accreditation visit.  Contained within this document are the objectives of  the fellowship program written in the CanMEDS format.  Supplementing these objectives are those for the sub-specialty rotations.  You will also receive a copy of the objectives from the American Board of Pediatrics (Pediatric Emergency Medicine).  We ask that you keep logs of both resuscitation and trauma cases in the department.  You will also receive a procedures log to be completed during all rotations.  Please provide feedback on all of your rotations directly to me.

We have recently designed an interactive website http://www.lhsc.on.ca/pedsemer/ to allow flexible scheduling of teachers.  If you have further suggestions in this design, please share them with me.

Fellows who have preceded you have compiled the following: “Tips for the lost fellow in finding their way in the PEDS ER Fellowship” which you will find in Appendix A.  I will ask that each of you verify this information as you rotate through the various rotations.

Again welcome to our program and if you have any questions during your time here, please feel free to contact me at any time.

For prospective fellows, please send me a letter of interest, your cv, and three letters of reference.
